It’s easy to get stuck in the mindset that if you don’t work with anything creative, you’re not thinking about what you’re doing. When in reality, the opposite is true. You have to get creative, you have to work with what you’ve got, and you have to keep things interesting.

One of the hardest things about being a designer is finding the balance between work and play. And the balance is often a compromise between two entirely different things: design and life. That can definitely be a struggle. I know it seems like it should be easy with the right tools. But I think having just enough of a design mindset to get by in life is pretty damn hard.

Design is not work. The challenge is working with what you have. A great designer can get by with almost nothing and still create something wonderful, but sometimes you just need to learn to trust your gut. That is why I think it is really important to balance the amount of design work you do with the amount of your life outside work. And that balance is a lot harder to find than you might think.

This is why I think that designers can often be so fickle, and why we should always strive to balance a design career with a life outside of design. Designers can be fickle because we love the tools that we use. In the early eighties, I worked for a company that was a big proponent of design fickleness. I worked for a company where each of the designers had a full-time job, but each of us had a day job, as well. That way, our work did not overlap so we could work on our own projects independently, but we also had each other to work with. This was a good system, where we didn’t end up working on the same design all the time.

I know that their name is still up on the wall in their office because I’m sure you remember their slogan. I’m sure you remember their logo. I’ve been to a couple of their offices and I know what you’re thinking.

Digi tech was a little company named after a pair of earphones from the 90s, or so we imagine. We went to visit one of their offices in Los Angeles, and the office itself was pretty impressive. I really liked the fact that there was a small park out in the middle of the office, so you could walk to it from anywhere. We also tried to get to the office, but Im still not up on all their marketing.

One of the offices was located in an old warehouse. The building had a few interesting architecture elements, but the most remarkable thing was the fact that the entire building was made of glass. It was rather cool.
