Pharmaceutical technicians are a vital part of the pharmaceutical supply chain. These individuals are responsible for ensuring that each drug is shipped from the manufacturer to the pharmacy. Many times they work long hours, which can be exhausting and tiring.

The pharmaceutical technician that I’ve been lucky enough to interview recently told me that for each drug the technician has to put in an order, the pharmacy has to pick up that order. For each order, they have to pay the pharmacy a certain percentage. For example, some drugs are not shipped from the manufacturer to the pharmacy until it’s the pharmacy’s turn to pay the pharmacy a certain amount. The technician has to make sure that the pharmacy pays the pharmacy the amount that they have requested.

While this might sound like a crazy thing to do, its actually a fairly standard practice in the industry. If you have a drug that you want to ship it to a pharmacy in, you make sure that the pharmacy is paying you for the order. Ive actually used this as an example to illustrate how hard it is to get pharma employees to do the job that they should be doing.

Pharmacy techs are typically paid a salary for performing routine tasks such as drug deliveries and filling prescriptions at retail pharmacies. Unlike other types of pharmacy techs, pharmacy tech salaries are typically fixed. That is, the technician has to submit a request for compensation to be paid to them. So a pharmacy technician working in a big pharmacy would likely be paid a much higher salary than one working in a mid-sized pharmacy, and a mid-sized pharmacy would likely be paid a much lower salary than a small pharmacy.

The most common job title online for a pharmacy technician is “pharmacy tech.” The title is a bit of a misnomer though because the pharmacist is actually the one that actually does the work.
