We recently received an email from a friend asking if I wanted to be a part of the Two Gigs Tech Support team. It was quite the honor! It was more about the opportunity to get extra work done for myself. The team I’m on now is more like a support group for 2 gigs, where we talk to each other a lot about what our concerns are.
Two Gigs Tech Support is a group full of people you may have seen either on Google+, or on YouTube. The group is made up of two different companies, but they work in the same industry. There are the two companies, and then there are the two guys. Our first chat with the guys was about how we all can help each other with problems we have, and how we can help each other to grow as a company.
We were talking to the guys about how our company is a software company that makes software for the world. One of the guys said that he liked the idea of being able to help other people. Another guy said that he likes that idea too, but isn’t sure he likes the idea of trying to help other guys.
The real problem is that these guys are two dudes that don’t really have any idea what they’re doing. That’s not to say that they don’t try to help people or that their help isn’t valuable, it just doesn’t come naturally to them. Both of these guys also have a lot of advice to give, so I think they just look at it as a good way to help each other out.
Two guys in IT need the help of a third guy in IT. They don’t know what they are doing. In fact, they only know what they need to get done and if they need help. They should try to avoid giving themselves advice. If they see a problem, they should give the advice, but dont try to fix it.
If a guy in tech cant help himself, he cant help anyone else. He might as well call a real tech instead of a tech-friend from school.
When I was a kid my best friend and I would sit around the house for hours talking about computers. One of us would say, “Oh, I remember the Mac II,” or “I have this fancy one,” or “I could tell you about this printer that I got,” and the other would say, “I could tell you about this IBM computer you got,” or “This computer was invented by a guy named Microsoft.
Tech support is not a cheap thing to do. As a matter of fact, I would say that most tech support calls are a pretty bad idea in general. You’re not going to get a good, helpful tech person by calling them and asking them to help you. In fact, because tech support calls are very expensive and there are a lot of them, I think many people in tech prefer to be on their own.
Thats pretty much what I would say too. Technically, I could call Tech Support and ask them to help me, but my options are much more limited than they are. Most tech support calls are pretty easy to get wrong. I’m pretty sure I’ve called Tech Support three times in my life, so I know I can do it.
My experience with tech support calls is somewhat different, too. I think there are a lot of people in tech who can’t actually be bothered to help you, that would rather be on their own. I think that’s because tech support people are really just a bunch of robots. They have a lot of time on their hands and don’t have a lot of people to talk to. I don’t think that’s a good thing.
