Models are paid to wear particular garments, but fashion designers can design their own clothes instead. Models can sign contracts that state that they will only work with designers, but a fashion designer has to negotiate with models to see if they want to work with them.
And it’s not just the modeling industry that is affected. We’re seeing a change in the “fashion industry too”. This is a recent trend. Back in the late 90s, clothing designers were just starting to work in the fashion industry. Now they have established themselves as being serious practitioners, and the models they work with are the same models who now sell their clothes in the clothing stores.
But as fashion designers, you can’t only work with models. You also have to deal with some pretty serious models. The good news is that it’s getting easier and easier to get models to work with you. And all you have to do to do that is show them you’ve got their best interests at heart.
In the fashion world, its called a “work-for-hire” contract. This is an arrangement where you pay a model for a project, and the model will do the work for you. They are the professionals here, and as long as they are working for you, you must respect that. You cant expect a model to work for you unless you’ve got their best interests at heart. Its kind of like hiring an Uber driver, but without the driver.
